Industrial Automation

"What is Industrial Automation?""

Industrial automation is the use of control systems, such as computers or robots, and information technologies for handling different processes and machineries in an industry to replace a human being. It is the second step beyond mechanization in the scope of industrialization.

Advantages of Industrial Automation

Lower operating cost: Industrial automation eliminates healthcare costs and paid leave and holidays associated with a human operator. Further, industrial automation does not require other employee benefits such as bonuses, pension coverage, etc. Although it is associated with a high initial cost it saves the monthly wages of the workers which leads to substantial cost savings for the company. The maintenance cost associated with machinery used for industrial automation is less because it does not often fail. If it fails, only computer and maintenance engineers are required to repair it.

Industrial Automation Systems are usually categorized into four types.

Fixed Automation System.

Fixed automation systems, or “hard automation,” are typically used for production systems with exclusively allocated equipment and high-production needs.

Programmable Automation System.

Programmable automation is a form of automation for producing products in batches. The products are made in batch quantities ranging from several dozen to several thousand units at a time. For each new batch, the production equipment must be reprogrammed and changed over to accommodate.

Flexible Automation System.

Flexible automation is a type of manufacturing automation which exhibits some form of “flexibility.” Most commonly this flexibility is the capability of making assorted products in a short time frame.... Flexible automation allows the production of a variety of part types in small or unit batch sizes.

Integrated Automation System.

Integrated automation systems incorporate the total manufacturing system into a computer-controlled, digitally processed and coordinated system. Integrated automation systems work through a common manufacturing system database.
