VS Lighting Solutions Ballast

ACDC Dynamics is proud to announce that it will now be supplying lighting ballasts from VS Lighting Solutions. With metal halide, mercury vapour, standard magnetic and electronic ballast all being made available.

A ballast (in relation to lighting) is a device which limits the current through an electrical load. These are most often used when a load has its terminal voltage decline when current through the load increases. If such a device were connected to a constant-voltage power supply, it would draw an increasing amount of current until it is destroyed or caused the power supply to fail. To prevent this, a ballast provides a positive resistance or reactance that limits the current. This makes the ballast a very important device when it comes to “smart” lighting solutions, as it has a substantial impact on the efficiency of any lighting used.



This is especially important when it comes to fluorescent lighting, as the ballast specifically for this lighting additionally increases the frequency of the power supply up to 20 000 Hz up from the average mains frequency of 50 – 60 Hz. This is done in order to prevent the lights from appearing to flicker, as the higher frequency means that it is not possible for the human eye to perceive any flickering at all.



With the increase in usage of ballast in lighting applications, and the improvement in technology, some electronic ballast can operate both high pressure sodium lamps, as well as metal halide lamps, greatly improving flexibility for lighting design. In these cases the ballast works as a starter for the voltaic arc initially, supplying a high voltage impulse, and after that, it works as a limiter / regulator of the electric flow inside the circuit.
